The Modern Warfare 3 community has been left split over the new Rubber Duck Operator skin in Season 1 Reloaded, with many feeling that it’s “unrealistic” for a game like Call of Duty.
The Call of Duty series has released tons of skins for players to buy over the years, from classic characters to high prolife crossovers. In Modern Warfare 3 alone, we’ve seen The Boys Operators as well as Paul Atreides from the Dune franchise.
As you’d expect, not all of these skins have been well-received, as some have disrupted matches by being hard to see. Meanwhile, others have caused controversy for seemingly not fitting the aesthetic of a game like MW3.
The latest Operator to divide the community is the Bath Time skin, which arrived following the Season 1 Reloaded update. It arrives as part of the Rubber Duck bundle and sees Corio wearing a bright yellow duck mask during matches.
Reddit user ‘bolt703’ shared an image of the skin with a sarcastic caption: “Love that MW3 is back to adding realistic soldier skins again.” Plenty of players responded by calling out the “dumb” Rubber Duck skin, urging the game to go back to its milsim roots.
“I can’t decide what’s a bigger pathetic joke: these skins, or the people that actually buy them. Gotta say, it’s pretty close,” said one reply. “I just saw this and I thought wow that is so sad. What the f**k is happening to this game?”
Others felt that Modern Warfare 3 is stuck between being a realistic military shooter and the more arcadey style of Fortnite, so the devs should double down on one side or the other.
“If COD wants to be a full blown cartoon arcade shooter that’s fine, but they should have Nikki Minaj, rubber ducky, and Sgt Pspsps on the cover instead of Ghost or Price,” added another player. “No more historical settings when you’re just gonna add laser guns and celebrities. But they won’t do that because they try to appeal to both crowds to get more sales.”
On the other hand, there were plenty of fans who defended the Rubber Duck skin in MW3, arguing that more light-hearted cosmetics are good for the game.
Just leave people alone and let them have fun. If some dude’s idea of fun is running around as a duck so be it,” said one reply, before another added: “This may be an unpopular opinion but I much prefer these goofy/silly skins to the cringey edge lord flaming skull type skins that are supposed to be ‘cool’ and badass.”
Although the reaction has been mixed to the Rubber Duck in MW3, it’s unlikely the devs will stop relating new colorful skins to the store. In fact, leaks have hinted that The Walking Dead and Warhammer 40k crossovers could come down the line.
