XDefiant is here and many players are flocking to the reliable Assault Rifle category for their Preseason matches, but which is the best? Here are the best ARs to use in XDefiant, including a ranking of each one from best to worst.
After many delays, XDefiant finally arrived on May 21 and players are already on the hunt for the best weapons in the game. The Assault Rifle category is home to some of the most powerful and versatile guns Ubisoft’s shooter has to offer, as they can hold their own on virtually any mode or map.
But before running into battle, here are the best Assault Rifles in XDefiant during Preseason.

There are just five different Assault Rifles in XDefiant at launch, but the devs have promised that more weapons will arrive in the Season 1 update and beyond. Here’s every AR in the game ranked from best to worst:

Best XDefiant Assault Rifles
MDR
UbisoftThe MDR is a Battle Pass reward in Preseason.
The MDR occupies a unique spot within XDefiant’s AR category, as it’s designed to be more of an SMG-hybrid than a long-range rifle. Its rapid fire rate and high mobility make it ideal for close-quarters fights, but it has enough range to dominate SMGs in more mid-range encounters.
However, it’s not quite as versatile as its fellow Assault Rifles, so you’ll have to play to its strengths and adapt your playstyle in order to get the best out of it.
M16A4
UbisoftAlthough the M16 has fairly impressive stats at long range in XDefiant, it still finds itself near the bottom of the list of the best Assault Rifles. This is mostly due to its burst fire, which makes it fairly easy to outgun in most circumstances.
While skilled players will still be able to make the most of it by nailing headshots from across the map, for the average Joe, there are plenty of better and more well-rounded options further up the ranking.
AK-47
UbisoftThe AK-47 is an absolute classic.
From this point onwards, we’re talking about the real top-tier Assault Rifles in XDefiant, and the AK-47 is a worthy inclusion. It packs a mean punch at virtually any range and outguns every weapon in its class when it comes to sheer firepower
The only reason it isn’t higher on the list is that I found its accuracy occasionally lets it down at key moments, as its unwieldy recoil cost me more than a few gunfights. However, those who can tame it and land their shots consistently won’t find too many stronger picks.
M4A1
UbisoftTaking the second spot is the classic M4A1, but don’t let its position fool you, it’s still one of the best weapons in all of XDefiant. It can pick off enemies from afar with ease, thanks to impressive damage stats even at long range.
It’s also extremely accurate, even without many attachments. The M4 is a popular choice in virtually any FPS, and I certainly wasn’t left disappointed here.
ACR 6.8
UbisoftYou can’t go wrong with the ACR in XDefiant
Taking the crown of the best Assault Rifle in XDefiant is the ACR 6.8. The ever-reliable rifle is FPS royalty and it’s absolutely dominating the early meta during Preseason, even though it’s one of the easiest to unlock.
What stands it above the rest of the AR category is the fact that it’s a truly viable option at any distance and there are very few situations where it doesn’t excel. It combines everything that an Assault Rifle needs to have – range, power, and accuracy – into one deadly and easy-to-use package.
