A new update for the Call of Duty HQ app could be great news for players, as leaks suggest it will reduce the game’s base file size by more than 100GB. Call of Duty has often garnered criticism from gamers for the massive amount of storage space it requires each year, but if a new leak is to be believed, publisher Activision may finally be addressing the issue in the game’s next big update.
After releasing alongside 2023’s Modern Warfare 3, which itself received massively negative reviews from critics, fans have often blasted the Call of Duty HQ app for its unintuitive user interface and massive storage requirements. For those who might be unaware, Activision introduced the HQ app as a central hub for each new entry in the series, starting with 2022’s Modern Warfare 2, its 2023 successor, and the free-to-play Battle Royale title, Warzone. Unfortunately, the app has never really received any praise, with fans regularly calling for its removal.
Call of Duty’s File Size May Be Reduced by More Than 100 GB
As Call of Duty Season 5 is quickly approaching its halfway point, fans are patiently waiting for news on the game’s big mid-season update. While Activision has yet to release any official details, the update may have just been added to PlayStation’s backend, as Twitter user PlayStation Game Size reports that it will reduce the HQ app’s base file size by more than 100GB on PS5. Version 1.078 comes in at just over 126GB, while version 1.080, which is currently unreleased, is just 25GB.
It’s unclear how Activision could have reduced the app’s file size by such a drastic amount, but it comes just weeks after the publisher removed both Modern Warfare 2 and 3 from the Call of Duty HQ. The studio didn’t explain why the two shooters were being separated from the HQ app, but it was likely to make way for the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 on November 14. Assuming the upcoming installment will once again be tied to the HQ app, it will then consist of Black Ops 6, Black Ops 7, and Warzone, with all other titles being separate entities.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will officially launch for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC on November 14. But for fans eager to see more from the title before then, Activision has officially confirmed that the popular COD Next event will return for Black Ops 7 on September 30. The event will see tons of content creators go hands-on with the next entry in the series, as well as a plethora of new information directly from developers Treyarch Studios and Raven Software.
