Black Ops 6 Zombies Adding New Grief Mode and More

Summary

  • Activision adds nostalgia with the return of fan-favorite Grief mode from Black Ops 2 on May 29.
  • Black Ops 6 Season 4 introduces Grief mode, a PvPvE survival challenge with mission debuffs.
  • Season 4 lacks new Zombies maps but offers 11 modified versions of existing maps called “Arenas.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies has teased the return of Grief mode, along with new gameplay content such as Ammo Mods and GobbleGums. While fans are used to getting a different Zombies map with each major content update, that doesn’t appear to be the case this time. Instead, the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 patch focuses on attachments, items, and the return of a popular game mode.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6‘s Season 3 update brought a wealth of fresh content to Zombies. Highlights included the Shattered Veil map, new GobbleGums, and the Elder Disciple enemy type. The fan-favorite mode, Team Cranked, also made a return, alongside a new LTM and Field Upgrade. Now, the upcoming season looks just as packed, with its standout feature being the return of a competitive challenge that was initially introduced in the series’ second installment.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Season 4 Bringing Back Fan Favorite Game Mode

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 developer Treyarch Studios confirms the return of an iconic party mode for the shooter’s big Season 4 update.

Grief mode in Black Ops 6 Zombies Season 4 is a PvPvE feature where two four-player teams compete to outlast each other. Players can’t deal direct damage to opponents, so victory depends on surviving increasingly tougher waves of enemies. True to its name, Grief mode allows teams to complete Zone Capture missions to impose temporary debuffs that disrupt the opposing team and make survival more difficult. The game mode will become available upon Black Ops 6 Season 4’s launch on May 29.

According to the Season 4 patch notes, Zombies won’t receive any new maps. Instead, Grief mode will introduce modified versions of existing Black Ops 6 Zombies maps, referred to as “Arenas.” At launch, there will be 11 Arenas, including two based on Liberty Falls and four from Shattered Veil. For those unfamiliar, an Arena is a condensed version of a full map, limited to select regions only.

It looks like Activision is leaning further into nostalgia. After adding the Legacy HUD to Black Ops 6 Zombies, the company is now reviving an entire game mode first introduced in Black Ops 2. Grief mode was originally planned to return in Black Ops 4 but was ultimately cut. That makes Season 4 of the sixth installment the first time this fan-favorite mode officially makes a comeback in the series. Those eager to try this intriguing PvPvE challenge should mark May 29 on their calendars.
